Unit 1 Project

For this project, you will be writing a review of a play called Canada on the International Stage.

The scenario

You are a theatre critic for a well-known Canadian arts publication. You have just come back from a play called Canada on the International Stage and are ready to write a review from your notes. The play starts in 1914 and progresses to the present day. There is a cast of characters, an intricate plot with some unexpected twists along with interesting dialogue.

Your Assignment

You will have to imagine what happens in the play that you will be reviewing.

Start by writing a set of notes in which you will write down five to seven significant events that have happened to Canada in the past century or so. Write down which characters from Canadian history that you will need to include. Find out what you can about these people. Hold on to these notes.

Your task here is to critique how the story of Canada has been unfolding. You will analyze how the actors have performed. You will consider the setting for the events. You will think about the global audience that has looked on and you will consider our history from the perspective of these onlookers. You will review all of this by asking how things have been going for Canada. What could have gone better? Where was our performance strong? Where did we misstep? What looked good and what didn't?

Your review should roughly follow the structure below, from WikiHow. You are not required to read the entire article on how to write a play review, but it could be helpful and it is worth skimming at the least. "How to Write a Play Review"

You will need to write a headline for your review with your byline. You will need to include one black and white photo of one of the actors and it must have a caption. It should end up looking something like the review below. The review itself should be five to seven paragraphs long (some of the sections in the template above could be expanded into two paragraphs).

Type and format your review in a word-processor such as MS Word or Google Docs. Hand in your notes separately. This will be marked according to the rubric below.
