Unit 2 Project
Throughout this unit, you have been learning about the developments of the economy of Canada and of BC. You learned about the railway age that began in Britain but soon made it to Canada. You read about the dream of Sir John Macdonald to have a country girdled by steel track from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
You found out about the ports that were fed by railway cars in Vancouver and Prince Rupert. These cars were often piled with lumber, coal, and other primary resources that were extracted in BC and in other provinces to the east.
You now know, however, that resources might still be important to BC's economy, they no longer hold the importance that they once did. Our economy has "matured" as they say, to one based on services rather than goods.
For this project, you will be reading and responding to these documents
You will need to divide your response into three sections in which you respond to the questions presented.
- How did BC's economy begin in the 19th and early 20th centuries? Why did it begin the way that it did?
- What are the major transformations that our economy has undergone and how has it stayed the same? What have been the causes of these changes and conditions for stability?
- Where does our economy appear to be headed?
Each section should consist of one paragraph. In each section, you must refer to the document being studied here. You should also do your best to draw from the course readings in this unit. It is not necessary to do any research outside of the course readings, but if you do, make sure to cite all sources that you looked at, even if you did not directly quote from those sources.
