Traditional Introduction

  Learning Target(s):

  • Recognize and identify personal, social, and cultural contexts, values, and perspectives in texts, including gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic factors
  • Construct meaningful personal connections between self, text, and world
  • Demonstrate speaking and listening skills in a variety of formal and informal contexts for a range of purposes

Considering the "First Peoples Principles of Learning" we can see that the exploration of one’s identity, memory, and history are important aspects of learning. Identity is very important to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and many individuals commonly introduce themselves by giving their names and explaining who their parents are, where they have come from, and on whose traditional territory they currently reside.

Introduce yourself in the same format, using a video or podcasting app. Your introduction should also include acknowledgement of unceded territory by identifying whose traditional lands you now live on and a brief description of your interest in taking this course and three personal learning goals. 1 to 3 minutes.

Review: refer back to the lessons to review the terms commonly used and history that affect the importance of one's identity.

Here is a tool to help determine what traditional territory you live on: Map of British Columbia First Nations

This link provides a pronunciation guide for most of the names of the First Peoples in BC: Pronunciation Guide

If you are still unsure you can Google "Whose Traditional Territory is...." or contact your teacher and they will help you figure it out.

Record your introduction using Audacity, GarageBand, iMovie or other recording software with the capacity to edit sound. Add either sound effects or music or both to augment your voice reading.

Export the file as an mp3 or mp4 format file and upload it to the dropbox. Alternatively uploading your video to Youtube and providing the link is the easiest way to submit your video. Here is a link to a tutorial on how to do that: Youtube tutorial
