A noun is a word that names something. Nouns can name people, places, things, or ideas. Most nouns name objects you can actually touch or see such as a baby, a mountain, or a sweater. Other nouns, such as freedom and sorrow, represent ideas and feelings. Let's look at some examples:

People: Barbara, Rick Hansen, my sister, several lawyers

Places: Stanley Park, Camrose, Ottawa River, Bay of Fundy

Things: a computer, some sour apples, a broken leg, six raccoons

Ideas: love, friendship, courage, hope, democracy, honesty

Feelings: pride, love, fear, sadness, sorrow, joy, happiness
