  2. Discrimination in Sport

Discrimination in Sport

Discrimination in Sport

Sports and athletics has to deal with discrimination as well.  Quite often sports can be used as a mirror to reflect back society's own issues around a subject.

Gender, sexual orientation, and race are some of the large issues that sporting organizations deal with.

Instructions

Below are 3 examples of discrimination in a sporting context.

Select one as a case study to explore.

You will have to do some research about the selected case study to be able to complete your presentation.

Put together a presentation (prezi, powerpoint, video, slideshare) that explores the situation.

Your presentation will address the following points

  1. A summary of the incident
      • Include any necessary history and background to fully understand the incident
      • Highlight the discriminatory issue
  2. Discuss the steps that were taken by the victim(s) of discrimination
  3. What steps were taken by the person/organization that was accused of be discriminatory.
  4. Explain the result that occurred as a result of this incident
      • Did changes occur?  Who/what changed? Why?
      • Do you think the outcome was positive for the victim? Should anything else have happened or not happen?
  5. Does this tie into a larger societal issue? (gender equity for example)
      • Did this incident help highlight or create progress on the larger issue?  Explain why or why not.
  6. Do you think this particular type of discrimination will ever disappear from sport?  Why or why not?
