6.1 The Hero's Journey

Task:  

For this assignment, you will choose a film to watch and analyze the the major stages of the hero's journey: The Departure, The Initiation, and The Return. Refer back to the description of the three stages in the course and your notes you made while watching the video "What Makes A Hero?"  You may decide to use the same film that you selected for the forum activity in Unit 4 IF it has the monomyth structure.

While watching the film of your choice, record your observations on the worksheet of how the film follows the structure of the quest journey.  You should refer to some of the stages discussed but it is not necessary to use them all. Record at least one notable quote from each major stage that you feel best exemplifies that stage.

After watching your chosen film and filling out the worksheet, you will compile your observations into a multi-paragraph expository essay that explains the major stages of the hero's journey and how they are presented in the film that you watched. Your expository essay should include an introduction and conclusion, as well as body paragraphs that specifically show how the protagonist of your chosen film goes through the various stages of the hero's journey. It is also recommended that you incorporate some of the meaningful quotes from your worksheet into your essay where appropriate.

Learning Target: Exemplary (6/6):  Exemplary comprehension of the task and clear accomplishment of the objective. A deep understanding of the plot structure is evident by accurately identifying examples from the film, choosing notable quotes to exemplify the stages and explaining the quotes in an insightful manner.

Written Expression:  Exemplary (6/6):  Expository essay contains well-organized paragraphs with an brief introduction and conclusion.  Work has been proofread and there are few or no errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar.  Content contributes to the central idea and makes insightful connections.
