1.3 Provincial Court Judge

You have been a practicing lawyer in BC for a number of years. One of your colleagues mentions that there is an opening for a Provincial Court Judge and suggests that you would make an ideal candidate.

The character who you will play for this assignment will be an actual sitting judge in a BC court at this time. To find a judge you will need to go to the Provincial Court of BC website. Once on the site, look for the headline "News." Scroll until you find a news item that contains the keyword "Appointment." Here is a link to an example.

Appointment of Judge David Patterson

You will be working with the most recent appointment of a judge in BC. You might also see a reappointment of a judge, and could choose to work with this if you like.

You should be able to create a resume just by working with the information on the appointment page. You can be creative about filling in details. You will be able to find out where this person went to law school and where he or she has practiced law on the announcement page. You will also need to fill in details regarding experience, specialization and any pro bono community work. This is where you can get creative.

Create a resume and cover letter for your application. Next, write a response from a member of the Judicial Council which outlines in detail why your application has been accepted.

How to Write a Resume

You will also have to read the course material in-depth as it contains details as to the requirements for a Provincial Court Judge. You may do research beyond the course readings and appointment notice, but must provide sources if you do.

Your cover letter will follow correct business letter format and will provide personal details as to your suitability for the position which extend the information in the resume.

The response could be a business letter or an email which sounds appropriate. The response will have to cite at least three of the points made in the resume and/or cover letter.

You can submit this as one longer document or three separate files. Be sure that they are all properly named.
