Assignment - Historical Collage
For this assignment, you will choose one place on the South Coast of BC where Coast Salish people once lived and where there continues to be a First Nations population today.
At this point, you should have a good idea of what life was like for Coast Salish people before European contact and what it is like now. However, you might need to do some research beyond the course readings.
The Assignment
You will create a collage in which you represent your understanding of what life was like on the coast of BC over 500 years ago and what it is like now.
Start with your choice of a specific place where you can imagine yourself standing. You might want to choose a place close to where you live or you could choose one of the following places.
- Victoria
- Yuquot
- Campbell River
- Pender Harbour
- Bella Bella
You could organize your collage with two sides representing past and present or you may organize it differently. For example, you could choose to use a scale which depicts continuous change over generations.
You collage will need to include at least ten images. You can find them online or you can create your own or do a bit of both. You may create this in digital form or as a hard copy.
In your collage, you should show that you have considered the following topics:
- Social organization
- Housing
- Language
- Food
- Transportation
Artist’s statement
When you have finished, write an artist’s statement in which you explain your overall thinking in creating the collage including how you selected and organized the images.
