Haida Language Assignment

For this assignment you will be answering the questions below in a short composition.

What efforts are being made to keep the Haida language alive?

What is the rationale for keeping the language alive?

Step 1 - Notes

Start by taking some notes from the course material and drawn from your learning guide to answer each question thoroughly. Your notes should include several points for each of the two questions.

If you need to do some research to fully answer the questions, do that, but be sure to keep track of your sources.

Step 2 - Considerations

In answering these questions, consider the following points:

A language:

  • Can tell us about how a society is organized
  • Will have words for particular tools and technologies
  • Is used to tell stories which convey beliefs
  • Will tell us about ceremonies and their meanings
  • Will have embedded within it understandings of the natural world.

Step 3 - Format

  • Short introductory paragraph will directly and succinctly answer both questions.
  • Second paragraph will provide specific details answering the first question posed.
  • Third paragraph will provide specific details answering the second question posed.
  • Concluding paragraph will summarize the main points made and will explain the implications of your answers.

Alternative presentation

If you would like to record this as an oral presentation, speak to your teacher first. If you choose to do this, you will still be required to submit point form notes.
