Unit Project - BC First Peoples
For this research project, you will need to choose one of the following topics as it relates to the groups of people whom you studied in this unit.
- Truth and Reconciliation
- Residential Schools Settlements
- BC Treaty Commission
Each topic deals with past wrongs by the Canadian and BC governments towards First Nations groups as well as recent attempts to address these wrongs. Not every topic will directly address each group studied here but all groups in BC will have been impacted in some way, if only indirectly.
The process
Once you have chosen your topic, you will need to create a thorough set of notes. Write down everything that you know including what you have learned in this unit.
Next, find out everything that you can about how efforts at reconciling past wrongs have impacted the groups you have studied.
You will need to address these concerns:
Which injustices were carried out against these groups of people in the past?
What were the long term impacts of the actions of the governments of Britain, Canada, British Columbia, and various religious organizations?
Which specific actions have been made towards reconciliation?
How effective have these actions been at reconciling harm done?
While you might not be able to find specific information for every question as it applies to each group of people, try to be as detailed and accurate as possible.
Resources
Though you will need to do some of your own research here, below you will find links which are good places to start.

Format
You may submit this project as an essay, illustrated report, slideshow or oral presentation. You should begin with an introduction, develop three to five subtopics, then wrap up with your conclusion. You will also need to include a properly formatted bibliography.
