Case Studies for Health
Now that you are aware of all the benefits of staying fit and the complications that can arise if you choose not to stay fit, your job is to choose one of the following case studies and analyze the effects of poor health on individuals.
Case #1:
A 38 year old woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a relatively healthy woman who tries to exercise at least 3 times a week, but with being a mom it is hard to reach that goal every week.
Case #2:
A 66 year old man has had diabetes for a large majority of his life. He is on insulin, but smokes a pack of cigarettes a day and gets take out for dinner almost every night.
Case #3:
A 70 year old woman has broken her hip and has been diagnosed with osteoporosis. She is trying to keep living an independent lifestyle and not rely on outside help.
Case #4:
A 48 year old man has severe arthritis in his hands and it debilitates his work as a handyman. He has been medicating for the pain, but has found that the medication is no longer having the same effect as it once did.
Case #5:
A 25 year old woman has been diagnosed with severe obesity and can no longer work for a living. She has been housebound for a few months and finds it hard to even get out of bed.
Directions
Once you have chosen your case study you are now required to analyze the case and come up with a working solution for the patient. Answer the following questions with detailed and thoughtful reflections:
- In detail, explain the patient’s aliment. How does this affect the patient’s physical health, mental health and what he/she is restricted in engaging in during their recovery.
- What are the short and long term effects of this aliment?
- How would leading a healthier lifestyle fight the symptoms of this aliment? Both before being diagnosed and after.
- Put yourself in the patient’s shoes and explain how you would change your lifestyle to increase your chances of living longer.
Presentation
Once you have considered the patient’s outcomes and solutions you now need to present your findings. You may choose a variety of ways of completing this task. Here are some suggestions:
- Technology: this could be a powerpoint, a prezi, a glogster… whatever web 2.0 tool that would create an innovative and creative presentation.
- Written: this could be a written essay, a story format or whatever else you may decide to try.
- Oral: this could include trying audacity or voicethread, or another audio software program that you are aware of. This could also mean just sitting down with your teacher and talking about the scenario.
- Artistic: this could be a traditional poster, a comic strip or whatever creative, illustrative format you can come up with.
